35th Anniversary of Apollo 14 and Walk On The Moon!
Dr. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 Astronaut and the sixth man to walk on the moon, selected the South Florida Science Museum to be the recipient of a long-term loan of a lunar sample for display. February 5, 2006 marked the 35th Anniversary of Dr. Mitchell's historic walk on the moon. NASA's Director, James Kennedy, made the formal presentation of the Ambassador of Exploration Award, recognizing the sacrifices and dedication of Dr. Mitchell and other Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronauts. The awards remain the property of NASA and are displayed at a museum of the recipient's choice for educational purposes. The goal of the award is to inspire a new generation of explorers. WPB Mayor Lois Frankel, Erik Edward Joh, SFSM Chairman and The International Space Station, also conveyed congratulations and good wishes on the anniversary of this auspicious occasion.
The third manned space flight to the Moon, Apollo 14 returned to Earth on February 9, 1971. Dr. Mitchell, the lunar module pilot, enjoys telling the story that his hand tossed javelin traveled farther than Adm. Alan Shepard's golf ball!
